This one is the real thing. It was likely mounted on a m1903 or Rifle U. Model of 1917, but it could also have not seen use until a war later, on an M1 Garand. No cracks, splits, or deep mars, but it should be heavily conditioned before even mounting on a rifle. Note curved hooks and original keepers. Can’t read the inscription fully, but the date is 1918, and there’s an inspector’s mark below that. I would NOT use this for serious carry on a rifle. It’s 98 years old, and they tend to split preciptously. A lot of these saw use in and after the Second World War, as the “Great War” finished with several million on order/delivered after the Armistice.
