US CIVIL WAR / INDIAN WARS ERA? LEATHER RIFLE SLING with DOUBLE WIRE BRASS HOOK M. I looked at this with a few people and we all believe it is a Civil War to Indian Wars era sling. It has all of the physical characteristics of an 1800s leather rifle sling. Sharps, Spencer or Henry type of rifle. 51 ¼ inches of leather and the total length is 28 ¼ inches. Keeper hook is in very good and straight condition. It is securely fastened within the end of the sling with strong leather and stitching. On the backside of the sling, there is a hole reinforcement of 24 ¾ inches. Of that, about 2 ¼ inches of it has come undone due to the stitching has broken. The backside is a rough texture common to leather. The hole reinforcement is slightly rough. The leather keeper is securely attached and has a small area of surface cracking. The top of the sling is a mixture of smooth, some surface cracking, and some areas of normal surface wear. The leather is strong and pliable. It is stamped within a rectangle: M. We do not believe this to be the year of manufacture. But rather a lot or other identification number. Currently not sure what this is for. For sale here is what i believe to be a US Civil War Era Musket Sling. If you know what this sling is for, please inform me, and i will update the listing. The sling is complete with brass buckle and hook. The sling is made of black leather. The brass components show heavy age and patina. The black leather is supple and strong, and looks good, but it does have some surface finish loss and crazing. That said, this piece is strong. The brass buckle is marked with the letter F, and the leather is marked with an inspector stamp of A. The sling is approximately 42 long including the buckle and the hook. The sling is 1 7/8 wide. For sale here is what i believe to be a US Civil War Era Musket Sling. If you know what this sling is for, please inform me, and i will update the listing. The sling is complete with brass buckle and hook. The sling is made of black leather. The brass components show heavy age and patina. The black leather is supple and strong, but is losing quite a bit of its surface finish. That said, this piece is strong. However, i cannot find any stampings in the leather, and the brass is unmarked. The back of the strap has the number 20 stamped in paint. I haven’t unhooked the sling, but it is approximately 42 long including the buckle and the hook. The sling is 1 7/8 wide. This is a great looking early sling that will display well! This sling was originally made from 3 sections that are sewed together and the stitching is very strong. It has one brass hook that has a nice shape to it and is securely fastened. The vast majority of the surface is very nice with some surface wear on the end that has the keeper. Both keepers are very nice but the stitching has come loose where the ends meet.
