LEATHER US MILITARY 1887 KRAG TRAPDOOR & SPRINGFIELD RIFLE SLING 1st Model FROG
August 31, 2019
Very good looking sling overall. This is an original leather sling from a Krag or Trapdoor. This sling type can and was used on other rifles up to 1907 and beyond. It has very good brass hardware and good to very good leather. The keeper stitching is very strong as is the section that holds the two sling leather pieces together. The brass button has some green tarnish. The frog is securely attached and has the 1st model legs which are thinner than the later frogs. Five frog holes in from the brass button, there is a crack. This crack may have been repaired but it may be weak. Three frog holes below the sewed section, there is a crack. The dark section looks a little weak due to the feel and surface cracks. This probably won’t hold the weight of a rifle but would be perfect for display. Adding a leather section on the backside of the cracks would strengthen the sling. The leather has medium and darker brown colors. The medium brown areas have a combination of smooth and surface wrinkles and the darker area has some surface wear, hairline cracks and some surface cracking. The leather is soft and pliable. It measures approximately 68 inches. The backside of the leather looks very good. The tip is stamped with what looks like ” G W “. I will be posting more of these slings.
