Indian War Era US Army Model 1873 Springfield Trapdoor Rifle Sling – 4th Pattern – Marked: Rock Island Arsenal – Original – Very Nice Condition. This is the 4th Pattern Sling, with the wide prong hook at one end and a brass stud loop at the other end. The sling is approximatley 1 1/4″ wide x 65″ long. The sling has the oval holes. This sling is made from a single length of leather, NOT the salvage civil was musket slings that were sewen together. The leather is soft and supple. Some wrinkling of the leather, no cracks or crazing. It has the original sling keepers. Still has the original dark brown color. The sling is marked: Rock Island Arsenal. The sling is used, please see photo’s for condition. The age of the leather, will make the sling weaker than when it was new, and may not be able to support the weight of the weapon. This is the Later Shorter, 4th Pattern Sling, with the wide prong hook at one end and a brass stud loop at the other end. The sling is approximatley 1 1/4″ wide x 66.5″ long. The sling has the oval holes. This sling is made from a single length of leather, NOT the salvage civil was musket slings that were sewen together. The leather is soft and supple. Some wrinkling, no cracks or crazing in the leather. No breaks in the leather. It has the original sling keepers. Still has the original russett brown color. There are no visible manufacture markings on the sling. The sling is used, please see photo’s for condition. The age of the leather, will make the sling weaker than when it was new, and may not be able to support the weight of the weapon. Check out my other items. This one is the real thing. It was likely mounted on a m1903 or Rifle U. Model of 1917, but it could also have not seen use until a war later, on an M1 Garand. No cracks, splits, or deep mars, but it should be heavily conditioned before even mounting on a rifle. Note curved hooks and original keepers. Can’t read the inscription fully, but the date is 1918, and there’s an inspector’s mark below that. I would NOT use this for serious carry on a rifle. It’s 98 years old, and they tend to split preciptously. A lot of these saw use in and after the Second World War, as the “Great War” finished with several million on order/delivered after the Armistice.
