US CIVIL WAR / INDIAN WARS ERA? LEATHER RIFLE SLING with DOUBLE WIRE BRASS HOOK M. I looked at this with a few people and we all believe it is a Civil War to Indian Wars era sling. It has all of the physical characteristics of an 1800s leather rifle sling. Sharps, Spencer or Henry type of rifle. 51 ¼ inches of leather and the total length is 28 ¼ inches. Keeper hook is in very good and straight condition. It is securely fastened within the end of the sling with strong leather and stitching. On the backside of the sling, there is a hole reinforcement of 24 ¾ inches. Of that, about 2 ¼ inches of it has come undone due to the stitching has broken. The backside is a rough texture common to leather. The hole reinforcement is slightly rough. The leather keeper is securely attached and has a small area of surface cracking. The top of the sling is a mixture of smooth, some surface cracking, and some areas of normal surface wear. The leather is strong and pliable. It is stamped within a rectangle: M. We do not believe this to be the year of manufacture. But rather a lot or other identification number. Currently not sure what this is for.
