Overall an nice sling. Dry , could use some conditioner or oil. Not marked or dated on keeper. Leather shows cracks to finish but no splits, or cracks to leather. The sling is a Boyt 44 marked sling. Original, leather, no fraying, nice and pliable with no tears, etc. Was treated with Neetsfoot oil to ensure it would not dry out. Has OUT OF SERVICE written on it which leads me to believe it was used until the military decided to remove leather slings from service. Remington model 742 woodmaster vintage with complete trigger marked (33), and guard, also included vintage Remington front and rear sights, and vintage leather 3 diamond AA&E sling with stainless steel swivels. I took the plastic 2 piece recoil pad off and added a aluminum vintage Remington butt plate. Since the recoil pad was off I sanded both butt stock and forearm down to the bare wood and added a Behr Cedar tone oil stain. Butt stock measures 13″ long and the forearm measures 11 1/2″ long from nose tip screw to end of channel opening. It also has an ebony grip cap. This one is the real thing. It was likely mounted on a m1903 or Rifle U. Model of 1917, but it could also have not seen use until a war later, on an M1 Garand. No cracks, splits, or deep mars, but it should be heavily conditioned before even mounting on a rifle. Note curved hooks and original keepers. Can’t read the inscription fully, but the date is 1918, and there’s an inspector’s mark below that. I would NOT use this for serious carry on a rifle. It’s 98 years old, and they tend to split preciptously. A lot of these saw use in and after the Second World War, as the “Great War” finished with several million on order/delivered after the Armistice.
